Limited Production Peacock Ornament
Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Newell Bridge
Dated July 4, 2005

I have read that 20,000 of these ornaments were made and that approximately 19,000 were given to motorists crossing the bridge on July 4th, 2005. The remainder were handed out to HLC employees. This makes them one of the first peacock-colored pieces released to the general public - and they handed them out for FREE.

The bridge took over a year to build and opened on July 4, 1905. It connected the town of East Liverpool, Ohio with the Newell, West Virginia townsite. This was great for the Homer Laughlin Company since, at this time, they had plants (kilns) in East Liverpool and were beginning construction of new facilities in Newell.

Philosophically, I love the idea of a bridge, bringing worlds and people together. If I had grown up to be an engineer, I think that I would have liked to build bridges.

This is the little tree that I set up in my kitchen last Christmas.
It was decorated with Fiesta ornaments and mini disc pitchers
and turned out to be a real conversation piece!
