Laughlin Art China

Laughlin Art China Orange Bowl

Art China was produced by the Homer Laughlin company in the early 1900's. It can be found with a variety of decaled treatments or can be hand painted. The most easily found decal treatment is "Currants" similar to that seen on their orange bowl, picture to the right. Please follow this link to view Art China items for sale.

New York World's Fair

George Washington souvenir creamer

In 1939 and 1940, the Homer Laughlin company and other American potters had a working kiln set up at the New York World's Fair. The various items produced were sold as Fair souvenirs, and most had a distinctive base marking. See some of Homer's items for sale here.

Newell

Laughlin Newell Sauce Boat and Underplate

The Newell shape was designed in 1928 by the company's newly-hired art director F. H. Rhead. He would, in the next decade, go on to produce some of HLC's most collectible shapes, Fiesta, Century and Harlequin. This shape has delicately sculpted edges and may be found in solid colors or decaled.

An extensive and versatile line of oven-to-table ware, developed and marketed by HLC from the 1930's on. Click here to view my Ovenserve inventory.

Riviera

Riviera Handled Mugs

Riviera, introduced in 1938, used the popular HLC Century shape which was dipped in colored glazes (Fiesta red and original green, Harlequin blue and yellow. During WW II, red was replaced by the ivory vellum glaze so that there would still be four colors in the set. It was marketed exclusively through Murphy Company until sometimes before 1950. Click here to see my Riviera for sale.

Rhythm

Rhythm was designed in 1950 by Don Schreckengost of HLC and was available in a variety of decals as well as in solid colors (grey, yellow, maroon, forest, chartreuse and turquoise). The impressive master salad bowl here has been VERY hard for me to find in good condition (but this one is beautiful!). Follow this link for details.

Wells Art Glaze

HLC Wells Art Glaze

The Wells shape was first exhibited in 1930 and was produced with various decals. The 4 solid coloured glazes came along a little later - Leaf Green, French Rose, Sienna Brown (commonly called "Rust" today), and Melon Yellow. I love these pieces, both the shapes and colors, particularly the iridescence of the rust glaze (photos DO NOT do it justice!). To see more photos & prices, please follow this link.

Wells Ivory

HLC Wells Ivory Casserole

I have separated HLC Wells Ivory ware from the Art Glaze above because it seems to me to establish a different climate or feeling on your table. It is more serene, not so much "in your face"! See my ivory Wells here.
