Mounting my GPS & external antenna
to my Mountain Bike

English El español Français Deutsch
Now that I can make custom maps for a Garmin GPS, I need to go out and collect accurate data of
new trails with my GPS. I can do this on foot or by bike.

This is how my bike looked before I added the GPS & antenna mount

I already had the cargo carrier which is mostly plastic, so the magnetic antenna had nothing to hold to.
Then I made a bracket and raised it so the antenna would mount.

The antenna cable is long so I wrapped it a few times around the carrier...

...And ends up loosely at the handlebar for the GPS

Emap mounted and connected to the Antenna, Vista is there for backup

Hardly noticeable, but ready to roll and collect data!
Why use a Antenna on a bike?
  1. Quick Satellite lock
  2. Full signal from all satellites above the horizon.
  3. Positions Antenna away from your body, which can block Satellite signals
  4. Heavy tree cover, NO PROBLEM!
patch antennas (used in etrex & emap models) are prone to loosing satellite lock even under light cover.
  5. Most of all, its another gadget!
See my 1st data collecting ride!
